The Benefits


The starting salary for this role is £37,073 rising to £40,380 per annum after 12 months


35.5 Full time Rotating shift pattern of earlies / lates / nights. The hours are averaged over 4 weeks (3 weeks on, 4th week work 1 day then rest of the week off)


There will be a requirement to work two weekends in four. One Saturday (06:00 - 14:00 ) and one Sunday (15:00 - 00:00am)

About the role


The Hub Engineer 1 is a member of the engineering team, supporting the Hub operation by maintenance, repair and improvement of all parcel handling equipment (PHE). The HE1 is a multi skilled engineering grade working to commercial standards and will be employed on duties which require a sound knowledge of electrical, electronic, mechanical and associated principles including:-

Manual Lifting and Handling techniques
Working at Height
Working in confined Space
Fault finding in Electrical panels

In discharging their technical duties, they will have a responsibility to exercise supervision of contractors and trainee grades assigned to them including "on the job" development and training.

HE1s will carry out mail searches at prescribed times and recover items on patrol which have fallen off or become lodged in the system. Damaged items will be collected with all contents and wrapping and taken to the operations for repair.
Cleaning or supervision of cleaning in designated areas will be undertaken as required.


In addition to assisting Hub Engineers level 2 and Hub Engineer level 3 as required and directed, they will be expected to perform the following work, according to the nature of their duties and experience with or without assistance.

Preventative and corrective maintenance of all PHE including:

  • linear drive tilt tray sorting machines
  • belt conveyors, fixed, curved and extending
  • roller conveyors, driven belt, line shaft and gravity
  • horizontal and vertical conveyor switches
  • mono rail, semi intelligent bag carrier
  • dynamic revenue data capture devices
  • dock interface systems
  • ULD weighing and transport systems
  • RF tagging systems
  • Roller powered doors


Work as directed within an individual’s skills and capabilities

Upkeep of plant preventative/corrective maintenance records and spare parts on the maintenance management system

Asset and stock control duties, including booking in and booking out of stores,alerting Engineering Manager to anomalies or low stock


 About you  


  • To be able to diagnose and solve equipment problems in a planned, cost effective manner, taking into account employee needs and customer requirements;
  • Act in accordance with current health and safety legislation identifying best practice, giving guidance and direction to others;
  • Hold a minimum of City and Guilds 'C' certificate or an equivalent qualification in electronic, electrical or mechanical engineering;
  • Full appreciation of all aspects of H&S Legislation and Standards;
  • Good inter-personal skills, communicator, computer literate, proactive interest in technological progress and problem-solving skills.


The Hub Engineer 1 is a key member of the Hub team and will develop and maintain customer relationships with key internal customers and suppliers understanding the views and 
needs of the customer. To optimise the performance of all plant the Hub Engineer 1 will maintain a proactive and flexible approach to breakdown prevention and the assurance of 
high equipment availability.

This is a multi-skilled environment. You will be qualified in at least one discipline but will be required to undertake work in other trades according to the nature of the duties
