As part of our future strategy, Royal Mail is creating a network of new and exciting automated Parcel Super Hubs.  These new Super Hubs will be pivotal to our transformation journey; providing state-of-the-art automation sortation solutions helping us to ensure we continue to excel at providing a great service to all our customers and the communities we deliver to. The Midlands Super Hub will be Royal Mail’s largest site processing over 1 million parcels a daily and moving 50% of the nation’s mail through our network of Mail Centres and Parcel Hubs for delivery both via road and rail through our on-site Rail platform.  
 
Our new Midlands Super Hub is due to become operational in Summer 2023 and we are looking for a passionate, motivated and experienced Planning Manager to join the leadership team and be part of our future.  You will play an instrumental part in the fast pace environment of the new Super Hub, managing and leading our teams to build trusted relationships and delivering a world class automated operation with the capability to process 60,000 parcels an hour.   


About the role
As the Planning Manager you will be a member of the Super Hub Senior Leadership team, responsible for the proactive creation and coordination of effective resource, equipment and maintenance plans across the across the site on a weekly, monthly and annual basis, taking into account resource planning, efficiency, operations (including for the Rail Head), maintenance and business demand.  You will lead discussions on resourcing with our Unions and will work closely in conjunction with the Maintenance, Operations (including the Rail head) and Flow Room teams to ensure there is a single plan driving all activity.  
An experienced Planning Manager, you’ll effectively manage complex planning of day to day operations, creating people resource plans and owning the relationship with agency labour providers, utilising IT based production control systems.  You will be the key contact to the wider business, reviewing forecasts and translating into site demands and plans, ensuring performance expectations are clear and reported against. You will lead a small team within the hub, maintain the site scorecard and production of site reporting, review and report on the performance of key business elements interacted with by the site e.g. Distribution and Mail Centres
You will also lead Continuous Improvement (CI) activity on the site, making sure this approach is a default across the site, demonstrating positive interventions to improve, with trained resources in place, delivering tangible benefits. 


About you
To be truly successful in this role, you’ll possess the following knowledge, skills and experience:


Knowledge 
•    Detailed understanding of the functionality and operation of a Parcels / retail logistics operation
•    Customer focused and aware of the external and internal requirements for quality, efficiency and accuracy
 

Skills 
•    Previous planning manager experience in a complex, fast moving, deadline driven environment
•    Excellent analytical and numeracy skills to support the effective evaluation of data and strong influencing skills to support delivery of complex change
•    Excellent report writing / presentation skills
•    High level of Microsoft skills
•    Highly attuned influencing skills and ability to work across areas for which may not have expert knowledge
•    Build and management of resource planning models
•    CI qualifications (e.g. belts, LEAN) and experience of running CI initiatives through others
•    Inquisitive, collaborative, and quick learning with a proven ability to respond positively to challenges and be able to think and act laterally to challenge custom and practice
•    Proven leadership skills
•    Good communication and people management skills
•    Ability to develop successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders
•    Must be able to forge a constructive partnership with management teams based on mutual trust and respect

 

 Experience
•    Parcels / retail logistics experience preferred
•    Experience of IT based Production and Control systems beneficial. 
•    Managing complex day to day operations and showing positive interventions to improve performance
•    Experience of working in a large operational environment
