Midlands Hub, Daventry / Northampton

At Royal Mail, we’re committed to being the best delivery service in the UK.

As the world we work in develops, we develop too; keeping up with the times and providing the best for colleagues and customers; creating a Royal Mail they can rely on, now and in the future.

As part of our long-term strategy, Royal Mail is launching a network of new, automated Parcel Hubs - two of which will come online within the next three years. These assets provide a much-needed, automated sortation solution for us to compete effectively in the parcels market, where we’re experiencing significant growth.

We’re recruiting now for a Parcels Hub General Manager to help bring our Midlands Hub to life and continue to manage the overall running of the site after go-live and into the future. This is a critical and very senior role within the organisation.

As the largest of the new hubs currently planned, the Midlands site in Daventry will process over a million parcels per day, with a workforce of over 600. With planning and building now well underway, this hub is due to go live in June 2023, with the scope for further operational growth in future years.

About the role
As the Parcel Hub General Manager for our Midlands site, you’ll have a crucial role in formulating and delivering the launch plans for your hub, and an important role to play in leading and delivering the operational quality and performance targets of the site. Our new hubs are highly automated, with state-of-the-art sortation solutions, utilising multi-modal connectivity, supported by extensive use of data and advanced systems. This hub is designed to be one of our showcases for the future both in terms of the automation and technology deployed, but also in how it operates and the skills and expertise of the team.

Working alongside the established large cross functional programme team building and commissioning the hub, in this exciting and challenging role, you’ll be responsible for the programme delivery of the site, successful ramp-up of operations and achievement of a scorecard of KPIs including safety, quality, cost efficiency and people. Once live, you’ll then manage the day to day operation of the hub moving forward. With effective leadership of your managerial and frontline teams, you’ll provide inspiration that creates enthusiasm and engagement across all levels of the business, delivering a climate that embraces positive change, builds a culture of high performance and creates a foundation for success.

About you
These hubs will be Royal Mail’s largest operational facilities, making this an amazing opportunity to be involved early on from our journey in large-scale parcels automation. To be truly successful in this role, you’ll possess the following skills and experience:

• Operational knowledge – expert operational knowledge related to managing large-scale, fast-paced, highly-automated, deadline-driven environments - both in terms of what happens inside the building and also in sophisticated yard operations.
• People Development – excellent and highly developed coaching ability, people management and development skills.
• Operational planning – operational planning and forecasting capabilities for complex large-scale operations with high levels of demand variation.
• Process management and improvement – process expert with detailed understanding of continuous improvement methodologies. Ability to demonstrate tangible performance improvements through generating a plan, introducing and managing process improvement initiatives, influencing across all levels of the business and changing behaviours.
• Technical knowledge – understanding of automation performance KPIs including OEE, experience of working with/leading an engineering team to improve performance.
• Experience with substantial financial accountability and the delivery of benefits.
• Ability to cope with ambiguity and operate effectively within a complex matrix environment.
• Personal tenacity and resilience to overcome and navigate barriers, with strong problem-solving capabilities and a ‘can do attitude’.
• Ability to operate at both the operational and strategic level.
• Dealing with trade union relations and influencing positive business change.
• Degree level qualifications or equivalent/experience.
• Experience of working within an automated environment with a strength in building collaborative working across engineering / technical / operations.
• Experience of working within a highly customer centric environment with the ability to deal with high profile customers.
• Experience in FMCG, in a time sensitive environment is desirable.
