Job Purpose


  • We are looking for a Data Engineer to have a key role for the end-to-end delivery of the data strategy at Royal Mail, working along with our Data Science team to ensure that engineering practices and product delivery have the best engineering practices and standards.
  • This is a crucial role for Royal Mail as a tech company. In order to implement innovative data use cases to put ourselves technologically ahead of our competitors, you should expect to have a high impact and visibility from the business.
  • We are looking for an experienced Engineer with a wealth of Data experience, but who also has recent experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployments to the Cloud.


In this role you will:


  • As a Data Engineer at the Group Business Intelligence department, you will be driving a large batch, streaming and machine learning applications from the design to production in the Cloud.
  • You will have an important role solving problems like routes optimisation, estimation of parcel delivery time windows, failures prediction in machines and vehicles.
  • In addition, you will take ownership of the following areas:
    • Contribute to simple, standardised and innovative ways to ingest, process, store and to analyse various data sources.
    • Design, implementation and monitoring of our cloud data platform.
    • Work with the Data Science team to deploy machine learning user cases to production.
    • Drive automation in the continuous integration pipelines, infrastructure management and configuration.


Qualifications and experience required:


  • You will have a deep technical understanding of:
    • Key data structures, algorithms and software design patterns.
    • JVM Languages (ideally Java and/or Scala)
    • Big Data technologies (Hadoop, Spark or Hive).
    • Understanding of prototyping/scripting languages (Python and/or R).
    • Experience with distributed applications in public cloud environments (ideally GCP).
    • Automated testing
    • Build and continuous integration tools.
    • Containerisation technologies (Docker and/or Kubernetes).
    • SQL
