Engineering, Architecture and QA

Engineering, Architecture & QA

As we evolve and adapt, it's essential that the technology we use does as well. We are the team responsible for designing, planning, delivering and supporting technology platforms, engineering and innovations. We need to stay one step ahead and make the best use of the tools available to the business. Working on such enormous scale means there's plenty of opportunities to be more efficient, but that challenge also brings a lot of responsibility.

Our solutions need to be resilient to support over 26 billion deliveries a year. We work to make strategic business and technology decisions for architecture, design and investment for platforms such as RoyalMail.com, RM Shop and PDA. It's a fascinating time to join our team, not just because of the investment in technology and our people, but because of the opportunities in the road ahead. We're looking for ways to automate and optimise a 500 year old business that connects 30 million addresses across the UK.

You’ll be supported and surrounded by great minds as you play a part in making our business better than ever before – an organisation transformed by technology. In our team, there’s potential for possibility and opportunities wherever you turn.

Our Work

Engineering, Architecture & QA

We needed a smarter way to plan the routes our vans take while delivering large or high volumes of packages, which can’t be handled on the posties’ daily round. The team worked to design, develop and deploy a solution that allows draft itineraries to be shared between route optimisers and those delivering the packages, with redirections processing and geocoordinates incorporated. Working according to Scrum and Agile methodologies, the team rolled out features to 15 pilot sites, where users can now look up 30 Million+ addresses with geocoordinates on a number of core platforms. Faster delivery times have been achieved for large and excess parcels where each five seconds saved per package can deliver millions in cost savings.

Our People

Rob Langtry - Transformation Architect

“I got my first BA job by pursuing an opportunity to support a part-time secondment. Later, when I applied for the BSL position at Royal Mail, my experience of both the PM and BA roles was key to evidencing the skills required, so the opportunity Royal Mail gave me was actually really helpful. I’ve found there are loads of ways to broaden your network whilst doing something constructive: Cross-functional projects and communities of practice like the BA community are a great way to meet colleagues and broaden your skills at the same time. There’s always something going on that needs volunteers. And there’s plenty of training courses, another good way to meet people you’d never normally work with.”

We're proactive about learning

"Training is quite a big thing for me and it's really good at RMG. They’re very proactive about putting you on courses and promoting you to go on them – also the people at RMG are so friendly, I have not met anyone who isn’t helpful, even if you have never met them, they’re open to you asking questions and helping you out, yet you’re also trusted to get on with things, not micromanaged."
