We have a very exciting opportunity for someone to join us as Shift Manager at our Milton Keynes Relay Dept, helping us to continue to improve and deliver the best service.

What does the role involve?
This is a role where you can take control and make a difference. On every shift, employees will look to you to lead the way. You’ll motivate them to achieve their best every day and also work with them over time to help them develop and reach their potential. It’ll be up to you to help the team to meet a range of operational targets, each one critical to improving our offering to customers, saving them money on a fast, high quality service.

As Shift Manager, you'll be responsible for managing the Relay operational unit at Milton Keynes and local customer base; achieving KPIs (cost, quality and people) targets.

You’ll have line manager responsibilities for c40 Frontline staff which will includes providing visible leadership, performance management (sick absence and conduct) and lead the team to achieve the quality of service targets.

Supporting the Unit Manager in both customer implementations and operational reviews, you’ll have responsibility to plan any required operational changes, while maintaining good relationships with key stakeholders such as; Fleet, HR, Account Management and customer services teams.

It’s an important time in our history, as we make tech a bigger part of our operation and you’ll be essential in helping our people to adapt and us to grow and evolve.

Attendance pattern
Monday to Friday. You need to be extremely flexible and be able to cover the day (9am -5pm), late (2pm – 10pm) and night shift (10pm -6am) when required.

What skills and experience are we looking for?
As this is an extremely interesting and varied role, we are looking for candidates from an operational background, who are flexible, can work under pressure and possess excellent leadership and communication skills.

As a leader within the business, you must demonstrate evidence on your CV of the following:

• Staff engagement with visible leadership on the Dept floor
• Good communicator with the ability to build relationships with Trade Unions, employees and internal stakeholders.
• Commercially aware.
• Able to manage change.
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Highly motivated and a self-starter with a willingness to develop self and team.


• Experience in an operations/logistics/warehouse environment.
• Experience of manpower planning and the ability to route plan
• Experience of line management, HR processes and management of unit personnel
• Proven experience of understanding and applying process improvement methodologies
• Full understanding of SHE (policies, procedures) in the workplace


Assessment Process
Your face to face assessment is designed to enable you to showcase your suitability for management positions within Royal Mail. You will take part in a capability-based interview and a short management scenario exercise more details of which will be provided on the day.
