Job Purporse 

 

The Area Distribution Manager is a pivotal Leadership role in National Distribution accountable for the transport management within the east midlands region which connect products and services across the UK. The Area Distribution Manager works in collaboration with stakeholders across the pipeline to lead on the strategic optimisation of our distribution services.  Their focus is to make sure all our products and services `Move to Time` in line with service and quality specifications. Specific to this role is the key accountability in our people and fleet in our Vehicle Operating Centre’s (VOCs), ensuring we are legally compliant at all times so that the brand reputation of Royal Mail Group is not compromised.

 

Key Accountabilities 

 

  • Overall accountability for policy application of health & safety and government legislation relating to vehicles and buildings via the leadership of the distribution teams
  • Lead compliance on all legislative requirements applicable to all fleet/trucks across the region.
  • Lead strategic projects across the distribution function such as the launch of our new Super Hubs, deploying new technology etc.
  • Best in class effective stakeholder management within Pipeline, Delivery, Process and Collections and external bodies
  • Commercial awareness and embracing digitalization are primary attributes that are needed to lead in a challenging, fast paced 24/7 Operation. 
  • Build professional and productive relationships with external commercially critical customers/partners
  • Coach and review unit performance with Distribution Managers, adopting a continuous improvement approach
  • Optimise Distribution sites by working in collaboration with the Linehaul Planning Team to drive pipeline efficiency 
  • Partner with the Trade Union, fostering a collaborative approach across the region 
  • Full responsibility for the ‘O’ Licence holder provision across all units within the region 
  • Ownership of all road transport legislation across the region and its consistent application in collaboration with necessary parties 
  • Maximise effective container flow via your management team 
  • Lead the effective application and deployment of business standards, policies and agreements. Coaching Distribution Managers where applicable 
  • Best in class business plan deployment via effective coaching and regular review of progress with Distribution Manager 
  • Ensure all special event activity is effectively deployed in collaboration via robust peak plans.

 

Key Dimensions

 

Responsibility for vehicle fleet operation totalling c.600 vehicles and trailers combined.

 

Team size

 

Leadership of 5 direct reports, including 4 Distribution Clusters, with a total team size in the region of c.550 employees .

 

Key Skills 

 

  • Knowledge of UK road transport legislation and activity to comply 
  • Ability to deliver results thorough people in a coaching and engagement environment 
  • Good analytical and decision making skills 
  • Leading and providing direction through engaging people 
  • Detailed understanding of Network Planning

 

Experience 

 

  • Extensive logistics experience
  • Experience of working in a union environment including effective consultation and negotiation 
  • Experience and ability to build strong stakeholder relationships 
  • Experience in change management and successful programme/project deployment to time and scope 

 

Location 
Daily travel within the region and expected national travel in line with expectations of a role at a senior level
