An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Royal Mail as a PLC Programmer. The role of a PLC Engineer is to lead the design and development of new plant, equipment controls and automation processes.  This role incorporates not only the design, including equipment selection, but also the integration into the wider Royal mail enterprise and the continual improvement of existing systems. Responsible to take a lead role in the development of the Controls & Automation strategy and specification and its dissemination across all departments within Royal Mail.
 
About the role
In this position you'll be responsible for the design of the Controls & Automation systems, starting with the system architecture and overall PLC to PC/EMC management interface, through to enterprise and local distributed intelligence

 

You'll complete control panel design for motor control, low voltage control distribution, safety systems and local distribution.  Site installation containment and end device mounting solutions

 

You'll play a key role in helping develop an Electrical design and validation strategy, compliant of all regulatory and statutory requirements which will form an Electrical Standard for Royal Mail Group

 

You'll be responsible, as part of the wider team, for the complete management from the initial concept, cost analysis, initial and detailed design (hardware & software), site setup, operational on-site management (R&MS, supervision, snagging, commissioning and handover) and ongoing client liaison

 

You'll be responsible for the Make vs Buy strategy for all Controls & Automation systems, Electrical and power control panel manufacture (in-house or via a contractor), site installation

 

You'll work collaboratively across organisations to deliver value for money integrated design solutions

 

You'll obtain, manage, and cascade knowledge of Royal Mail engineering systems and Engineering design solutions to the team and wider project stakeholders

 

You'll act as a business expert on Royal Mail systems using their expertise to support the life cycle management of proposed solutions

 

You'll manage and record risk. and opportunity effectively to foster a culture of innovation whilst ensuring operational needs are met and balanced against stakeholder investment
 
About You
You will have the following experience:
•    Minimum of 5-years demonstratable experience in a variety of PLC systems. Siemens S7, SIMANTIC, SIMOVE an advantage.
•    Minimum of 5-years demonstratable experience in LV distribution, the design, installation and commissioning of such systems
•    Minimum of 5-years demonstratable experience in small power, the design, installation and commissioning of such systems
•    Relevant previous experience of maintaining and installing LV, small power and lighting systems
•    Experience of managing multi-skilled teams in multi-shift operations in both a Manufacturing/Maintenance as well as contractors/contract labour in a construction environment
•    Experience working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
•    Proven Project Management Experience
•    Experience of working in partnership with a Trade Union
•    Working knowledge and experience of delivering safety metrics and the understanding safety systems applicable to plant & equipment / industrial environment
 
The skillsets required to succeed in this role:
•    Proven ability to work within tight deadlines & be able to manage and prioritise multiple activities simultaneously
•    Experience and working knowledge of Health and Safety and ergonomics including risk assessments
•    Ability to make short presentations to work groups and senior management
•    Relevant degree or equivalent experience preferred in an electrical discipline
•    Demonstrable knowledge of Legislative and Industry Standards in automation
•    Microsoft package elements Power Point and Excel
•    Thorough Understanding and Application of Lean Tools and Techniques
