About the role

Reporting to and supporting the Functional Operational Director (FOD) for our Northern Region, you will be responsible for delivery of a highly professional and thorough framework of support for actions to deliver performance improvements across the balanced scorecard, as well as the strategic plan, and to act as a key senior operational business partner to the FOD, and support in identifying, reviewing, and challenging strategic operational plans that focus on delivering sustained performance improvement.

 

You will also:

  • Provide support to the FOD and to act as filter to both internal and external customers.
  • Provide, consolidate, and review insight data at both a National and Regional level to define and direct content for weekly tier 5 calls, monthly meetings, and QBRs, focusing on defining plan of improvement to drive enhanced performance.
  • Be responsible for reviewing operational plans and accountable for driving targeted actions with the region to achieve balanced scorecard metrics and ensure focus on delivering KPIs across the region.
  • Support the FOD Team in their operational responsibilities, including progressing, resolving, monitoring, and recording all briefings and actions to ensure all business requirements are met and exceeded, and highlighting areas of non-completion.
  • Proactively identify and ensure the FOD is aware of urgent requests or operational flashpoints i.e., IR issues/LTAs/Dismissals, acting as a point of escalation for these types of issues, and be responsible for ensuring correct resolution paths are followed.
  • Strategically identify and deploy special projects on behalf of the FOD, such as Town Halls and Leadership events, designed to focus attention on driving performance improvement.
  • Support to identify coaching and development opportunities for teams to focus on achieving goals, and work with senior members of the centres of excellence to embed practical plans to address gaps.
  • Maintain strong functional links to the centres agreeing standards and consistency of approach in deployment of strategy, standards, and policies.
  • Act as the trusted advisor to the FOD team to ensure our operational teams and functional business partners work as a collaborative and synergised team, delivering best in class results across the balance scorecard.
  • Be responsible for owning, creating, and driving performance of the weekly and monthly reports for the FOD that ensure a consistent focus on core KPIs.
  • Act as key presence in the region, responsible for driving performance improvement across the region, achieving this through coaching, leading, and influencing the team to ensure consistent focus on activity to drive KPIs.

 

About You

To truly excel in this role, you will possess, and be able to evidence, the skills and experience listed below:

 

  • Experience of working at senior leadership level, including direction setting.
  • Ability to lead activities and deliver through a virtual skilled and professional team in a matrix working environment, providing clear direction and focus.
  • A thorough understanding of Royal Mail operational processes, financial dynamics, and systems, or relevant industry experience.
  • Knowledge of mail operations and business development, strategic, and financial planning.
  • Highly credible and responsible professional, able to quickly establish respect with peers and line managers in the team.
  • An effective communicator who can support teams in their understanding of financial and budget management, and collaborative in approach. 
  • Ability to understand and absorb substantial amounts of information quickly and accurately, and analyse, consolidate, review, and present data from a range of sources for weekly and monthly meetings.
  • Capable of precise and well-argued judgement and must be able to influence and persuade at all levels, supported by strong presentation, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to effectively support the management of budgets and targets on a wide range of metrics, including financial performance indicators.
  • Possess a high level of integrity, a high degree of resilience required, and strong influencing, inspiring, and coaching ability.

 
Key Relationships 

  • As a critical business partner, coach, and support to the FOD.
  • Key role in coaching, influencing, challenging, and driving the right behaviours at regional level to ensure a shift in operational performance.
  • Collaborate with the wider Business Office top team to align priorities to ensure consistent and pointed focus on performance.
